On October 28, all the tollbooths on the Massachusetts Turnpike stopped cash payments at 9:45 PM. They were in the process of converting to All Electronic Tolling. There are gantries between most exits. On the last day of work, toll collectors said goodbye to their jobs. The state took their jobs away. As the implementation of All Electronic Tolling began, people waited in line at many retail locations to get EZ-Pass transponders. The rate is cheaper if you get a transponder and for people who don’t want a transponder, the gantry will take a license plate picture. Then the Pay by Plate customer will get an invoice in an orange envelope in the mail. The rate is higher if you use Pay by Plate. All vehicles must pass through the gantries if they do or don’t have a transponder.
